Stress less

By: Zoe N.

With school in full swing, sports and Girl Scouts, things can get pretty stressful. Keeping your cool isn’t always easy. Here are a few tips for staying calm under pressure:

  • Try listening to soothing music. It will help you relax, which everyone knows is the best stress relief. If you are calm and slow music just isn’t your thing, put in your favorite rock CD and dance till you drop!
  • Getting a good night’s sleep is also important. After all, it’s hard to be perky when you’re so tired that you can’t keep your eyes open. If you’re having trouble falling asleep, pick up a book and read a few chapters before you go to bed. Make some chamomile tea and drink it while you read. Don’t watch TV or use the computer too close to bedtime, as these things keep you awake.
  • Yoga is another good method of relaxation. Make it a part of your regular routine. Concentrating on your breathing takes your mind of your worries.
  • Exercising can be helpful for lowering your stress level. When you find yourself stressed out, doing something athletic is a great way to cool off. Practice your favorite sport, or take your dog for a walk. Go outside and get some fresh air.

Stress can be hard to overcome but with a deep breath and a little relaxation, you’ll be on your way to a stress free day!

How to earn money

By Leka G.

Are you short on cash? Do want that new iPod or cell phone? Do you need a job? Well, just follow these steps to get a job:

  • First, age matters. If you’re over 14, you can work at most places. If you’re 13 or under, you can be a babysitter or work for your parents if they own their own business.
  • Next, figure out the things you like. You can find out about jobs by asking people who have that job about what they do. If you like little kids, be a babysitter. If you like to work with food, work at a restaurant.
  • Well, what happens if you don’t want to work for someone else? Hey, become a babysitter or start selling things that you make, like jewelry or even honey! For example, Sophia of Woodward Academy raised honeybees and sold fresh honey for cash.
  • You can also sell good old-fashioned lemonade, cookies or maybe even some paintings.

Now that you know how to do it, go out there and make some money!!

Eight ways to go green!

By Jessi S.

  1. Turn off the lights- The simplest way to conserve energy is to turn off the lights when you leave a room.
  2. Use reusable shopping bags- At most local grocery stores you can purchase a reusable bag for your groceries. The bags are usually made out of recycled materials.
  3. Recycle!!- Did you know that Americans throw about 38 billion plastic bottles away each year? According to the Aug. 20, 2007 article, “Drink water, but don’t be a drip,” in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, it takes 1,000 years for a single plastic water bottle to biodegrade. If you multiply that by the number of bottles thrown away each year, it's unbelievable! There is a solution for this dilemma. You can recycle your cans and bottles at a community-recycling center or even at your school. Bottles and cans are not the only things you can recycle either. There are also places where you can recycle ink cartridges, old cell phones and even worn out reusable batteries. There are many community programs, but if there isn’t one near you, visit this Web site to get your iRecycle, home battery recycling kit.
  4. Change the light bulbs: Change to Compact Flurescent light bulbs or CFL’s. A standard CFL uses 75 percent less energy than a normal incandescent light bulb. Plus, replacing one light bulb can save you over $30 on your power bill.
  5. Buy in bulk- Instead of shopping at a regular grocery store, try shopping at a wholesale store that has bigger portions so you can pour them into reusable containers.
  6. Unplug- One of the biggest energy wasters is phone chargers or electronics. Besides unplugging these devices you could get a “smart” power strip which keeps these “vampires” from sucking up energy when they are not in use.
  7. Save gas- It is very important to save gas. Right now we need to save gas or we will not have any left for the future. One way to save gas is to ride a bike or even walk to where you need to go if it is somewhere close. This saves energy and allows you to get some exercise in. If you are going somewhere farther away, find someone who lives close to you that you can carpool with. You can also save gas by going 55 mph or less. If carpooling is not possible, try public transportation. And be sure to maximize your trips by making sure you can do everything you need in one area.
  8. Share- Tell your friends and family members about going green. This is one of the only ways ideas get around. Tell people about how important being eco-friendly is; if we don’t treat our earth with respect we won’t have this wonderful earth for much longer. There are easy ways to spread the green movement. There are many online communities where you can talk to other people who are trying to go green like this Web site for example.

Go make a difference

By Michelle M.

High school is a period of your life where you can define who you are as an individual and it can be summed up in one word, change! High school provides you with unlimited opportunities to become involved in things you care about. You can be proactive by joining or even starting a club. In doing this, you provide others with the opportunity to help those in need. Sometimes all it takes is one person to make all the change, but it all begins with that initial step.

In order to start a club, you must be dedicated. Pick your passion. After that, you must find a teacher to sponsor the club and get the approval of the school. Next, spread the word! Pick a time and place for your meetings and let your friends know. Get the word out! Make posters and flyers and even put an advertisement in the school announcements. You will be amazed at how many people truly want to help but just don't know how to contribute. Starting a club is very time consuming, but the rewards are endless; think of the impact a group of passionate teenagers could have on our society!

Don’t be afraid to take that initial step towards a cause that you care about. As Mahatma Ghandi once said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Go make a difference!
