Outreach Development
Girl Scouts of the USA is a pluralistic organization with a diversity goal that states:
"Girl Scouts of the USA will reflect the full diversity of the population in its girl members, volunteers, and staff; eliminate institutional racism throughout the Girl Scout Movement; and initiate effective interaction among diverse populations."
Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta created the Outreach Development unit to achieve the diversity goals as promoted by Girl Scouts of the USA.
Goals and initiatives of the council's Outreach Development
It is our goal to increase the involvement of girls who otherwise would not have the opportunity to grow through the Girl Scouting experience. To attain this goal, the Outreach Development unit conducts the following initiatives:
- Recruit bilingual, bicultural girls, volunteers and staff
- Make Girl Scouting available to all girls ages 5-17 with emphasis on:
- Girls from all racial and cultural communities
- Underserved girls in high-challenge environmental and social economic situations, including girls in housing authority, juvenile justice system, restricted living accommodations, rural areas, girls with disabilities and other collaborations. (Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA and Girls, Inc.)
- Provide financial assistance for membership and girl events
- Establish interest groups for Juvenile Justice Program
Outreach meeting sites include schools, community resource centers, housing authority facilities, places of worship, youth-serving organizations, youth detention centers, women and children's shelters and other grassroots organizations. See what our Outreach troops are doing now to make the world a better place!
